About Northwind Labs
The company started as a two-person consultancy building reporting dashboards for e-commerce clients. The internal tool they kept rebuilding for each client became the product, and it now serves around 400,000 monthly users across 3,100 paying organisations.
Engineering is organised into six product teams of five to nine people, each owning a surface end to end. There is no separate QA function and no on-call rota below staff level.
How they work
- Asynchronous by default. Two overlapping hours a day, decisions recorded in a written log.
- Documented over discussed. Every significant change starts as a one-page proposal.
- Four gatherings a year. One company-wide week, three team weeks, all expenses covered.
- No performance ranking. Twice-yearly reviews against a published career ladder.

Interview process
Five stages, typically completed within three weeks. Feedback is given at every stage, including rejections, and the take-home exercise is time-boxed to three hours with the brief published in advance.
